This post will mostly be about my short study tour, but since I am also including this past weekend, I did not want to title it "short study tour", instead opting for the next most logical title.
Saturday I went to my host cousin Gustav (not Gustavo as I originally said. but it is pronounced "Goose-tau" which also can sound sort of like "goose-ta-o" which sounds sort of like "gustavo"... anyways it was about an hour away, in some small town I don't remember the name of. (Sorry for ending that sentence with a preposition. It is something that bothers me when I do it, but not enough that I want to take the time to figure out how to fix it) The party was fun, it was family only, so aside from me, Carsten, Christina, and Jeppe (Mikkel was working at his new job at Netto) was the host family (Helena, Regin, Gustav, and Asker), as well as Helena's father, step-mom, and half brother. Asker and Gustav were 10 and 8, so did not really speak English, but everyone else did. Aside from eating cake and pizza, we played some soccer outside and some Fifa inside. It was a nice time and I enjoyed relating the Danish family birthday party to what it is like back home.
On Sunday I went bowling! It was part of our Roskilde-area host family and student get together. I was on a team with Allison, Jordan, Jeppe, and Audra, and we started against a team of 5 host parents, including Carsten and Christina, but two more girls showed up (Alex and Lizzie) so they joined the other team. It had been quite a while since I had bowled, and even longer since i had used a ball that was not my own, so I started slowly, but ended with a not too shabby 118. I was doing better the second game, with 130 in the 7th frame, but the I found out that since we had the place rented out until 15:00, that meant right at 15:00 all the lanes shut down, and I didn't get to finish. But that was ok, because then we went over to the BBQ at the home of a family hosting a boy named Matt. It was a nice home, with plenty of space, as the father farms and the mother runs a flower shop. I hung out for a while first playing Frisbee with Jeppe and many students who I met (Eliza, Caitlyn, Alex, Lizzie, Lizzie, Olivia, Nikki, Emily...yes, as several people pointed out, girls rather outnumbered guys at this event, and also in general so far). Later I threw a baseball around with Matt, Audra, and Jordan, which was a nice change from Frisbee. I like throwing a baseball around, and don't do it that often. The food was good and plentiful. When the event was over, we took Lizzie (the Lizzie I had bowled against, not the other one) back to the bowling alley to pick up her bike, and then back home, since her host mom had not come to the event and it was gross outside, so she didnt want to bike home.
Wow, this has already been a lot. Maybe most of it won't be study tour after all. We'll see how much I have to say about that.
The study tour started me running out the door to catch the bus and in the rush, forgetting to get my lunch from the fridge. This was later replaced at the cost of DKK 69; not terrible, but still not a great start. Then, upon arriving at our meeting point at the Natural History Museum it became apparent that I packed more lightly than my classmates, so I spent a little while worrying I had underpacked and would therefore end up being miserable due to lack of something at some point during the trip (this didn't happen). We had a lecture at the museum about the quaternary geologic history of Denmark, then headed to the bus that was waiting to take us south. Our First stop was at Stevn's Klint, a beautiful chalk sea cliff that is on of the best places to see the K/T Boundary, or "Fiske Clay" From there we moved on to a Cold War museum which had some old defense weapons displayed above ground, but was mostly in an old underground navy base carved into the limestone, making it also a cold, war museum. It was pretty cool, but nothing all that special. We then continued on to the island of Møn, where we were staying at a little motel/hostel place. Seeing as only 4 of the 19 students were guys, it is not surprising we all ended up in the same room. I slept up in the loft with Eric/Eli while Tyler and Drew slept downstairs. After arriving and unloading our stuff, we all headed to Bryghuset Møn, where we had a very enjoyable dinner, although with a bit of confusion for the some of the vegetarian folks (steak is red meat, even if it is very well cooked). After food, sleep. Tuesday was Mønsday (get it? it's like Monday, but instead is referring to Møn's Klint), which is another beautiful chalk cliff. The stratigraphy is not as nice as at Stevn's Klint, do to glacial action, but the cliffs are higher, more beautiful, and generally more impressive. After a brief stop to climb the highest mountain in Denmark (pretty pathetic), we walked along the beach at the foot of the cliffs, finding an occasional belemnite fossil and many good skipping stones. We paused for a brief swim/hot cocoa break, and while everyone seemed to enjoy the beverage part, only Drew, Trevor and I decided to enjoy the water. The walk along the beach was very enjoyable, and I talked with/got to know a number of new people. After our walk we checked out the Geologic Center. I thought it was great for such a small place. After this we headed back to Stege, and had an evening with no planned activities. I had dinner at a little cafe in the central square of Stege with Amanda and Drew, then walked around the town a bit before returning to the motel. Stege is a small town, and there was really not much to do, so everyone returned pretty early. As I am sure my mother will be delighted to hear, I brought out the Cosmic Wimpout and a bunch of people played two rounds to 300. It was very exciting, if you want more details, ask me about it. After Cosmic Wimpout everyone who wasn't already asleep or baking cookies played some pretty intense spoons. After spoons came to an end I sat outside with Trevor, Eric/Eli and Brianna for a bit, and we had some nice conversation. This morning we left the motel for good and had a little guided tour to a few places on Møn given by a local guy named Stig, who was quite a character. After parting ways with Stig we headed to lunch at Babette, where we were treated to several courses of traditional Nordic food with some added elegance. We were also given a tour of the kitchen, which was rather small given the restaurant's capacity to serve 2,000 people, and got to watch as some of the chefs prepared an evening meal for the Queen, who they were going to be serving tonight. After a delicious and luxurious meal, we headed home, with many people deciding to use the bus trip for a nice nap. On the train back to Roskilde from Copenhagen I had a nice chat with Audra and Alison about classes/majors/capstone projects and such things. Dinner back with my host family was some yummy corn pancakes with some peas and hot peppers for flavor, and afterwards we went over to the neighbors to help them eat some leftover desserts they had from a birthday party.
These last few days have been great. While the study tour may have been short, and not necessarily something I would call spectacular, it was a great opportunity to get to know the classmates and professors in my core course and see more of Denmark in the process.
Also I took many pictures, which I promise I will post soon, but right now I'm pretty tired, so I will put that off until another time.
